Canadian Government has announced Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships VCG. The scholarship program is running in many universities in Canada. More than 150 scholarships are awarded to the international students to pursue their PhD degrees in the universities. It is a fully funded scholarship that can cover majority of the expenses of the students.

The scholarships were named after the first francophone Governor General of Canada, Major-General Georges P. Vanier. They can provide numerous benefits to international students.

  • The total value of the scholarship is $50,000 per year.
  • It will cover the tuition fees, and other educational expenses of the students.
  • It provides international exposure and global networking.

What is the eligibility criteria for the scholarship?

  • Institutional Nomination: the candidate must be nominated by one Canadian institution with a Vanier CGS quota.
  • Doctoral Program Requirements: the candidate must be pursuing the first doctoral degree (including joint programs, e.g., MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD, MBA/PhD).
  • The candidate must be enrolled as a full time doctoral student.
  • Only the PhD portion of joint programs is eligible for funding.
  • Study Duration Limits (as of May 1, 2025): the duration limit may vary accpording to the condition.
  • The candidate must complete no more than 20 months of full-time doctoral study.
  • The candidate must Complete no more than 32 months of full-time doctoral study if:
  1. Enrolled in a joint graduate research program (e.g., MD/PhD, MA/PhD).
  2. Enrolled directly into a PhD from a bachelor’s program.
  3. Previously enrolled in a master’s program but did not obtain the degree and transferred to a doctoral program.
  4. Academic Performance: He must achieve a first-class average in the last two years study.
  5. Funding Restrictions: He must not have received a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC for the current or a previous doctoral program.

Complete Application procedure for Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

  • Eligibity criteria: Confirm your eligibility criteria for the scholarship. Make sure you meet all the requirements for the scholarship.
  • Select your desired institution and contact to them.
  • Create accounts: Create your application account on the application portal of ResearchNet.
  • Then register yourself on the following mandatory portals.
  • Prepare CCV: Now, formulate your Canadian Common CV. See the instructions of the CCV here.
  • Include all the previous educational information in the CCV.
  • Link the CCV to the RearchNet application.
  • ResaerchNet application: Start your ResaerchNet application by logging in your account.
  • Click on “Find Funding Opportunities” and select “Apply for Funding” to display a list of the currently available funding opportunities.
  • From the “Actions” menu on the right-hand side, select “Apply to this Opportunity” to access the main Vanier CGS application menu
  • Identify the area of research.

  • Enter the confirmation number of the CCV.
  • Upload all the supporting documents.
