So, in Finland, there are basically two types of colleges: They both offer bachelor’s, master’s degrees, and PhDs but they have some differences in how they admit students.
- Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) focuses more on teaching practical skills that are needed in the job market. They also do some research to help improve their teaching methods and to support the development of their local areas.
- Universities are all about diving deep into scientific research. They offer more advanced education, like postgraduate programs, based on this research. Their main aim is to expand knowledge through research and to educate the next generation of experts.

Deadlines for Finland Government Scholarship
- Every year in January, from the 8th to the 22nd in 2025, Finland holds the application period for studies starting in autumn (usually September). This is when you can apply to various degree programs, and the cool part is, you can apply to up to six programs all at once!
- But here’s the thing: some programs also offer a January start option. For these, the joint application period opens up in September, from the 28th of August to the 11th of September in 2025. Just keep in mind that the September application has a smaller selection of programs compared to the January one. So, if you’re looking for more options, January might be the way to go!

Hello dears,
My name is Teka with a strong background in Geology, specialized in Structural geology and tectonics with an excellent thesis status at Mekelle University, Ethiopia. My thesis work was focused on field based geological and structural analysis and mapping, mineralogical and microstructural investigations under microscope, and geochemical analysis to understand the volcano-tectonic evolution, modeling, nature of the volcano-tectonic structures, geology, and petrogenesis of the volcanic rocks, i.e., The Gada’Ale shield volcano basalts, at the northern end of the volcano-tectonically active rift segment, the Erta’Ale volcano range, Northern Afar Depression,Ethiopia.
With this strong academic background and research experiences, I am on progress to publish part of my MSc thesis data on one of the higher impact factor journals of struuctural geology, and is under progress. I am eager to pursue my PhD degree at young age, therefore, I am to ask you that are there geoscience related opportunities at your university so as to apply.
Thank you for your timely consideration.
Best regards,
Teka Asresie
